Sometimes even little countries can truly do great things. And this is indeed the case of Honduras, a small country in central America, lapped by the waves of the Caribbean Sea and with a population of only 7 million inhabitants. But what is it that makes this country so important internationally? Its coffee of course!
With an annual production of approximately 6 million sacks of coffee (mainly Arabica) it earns its place as one of the largest coffee producers in the world.
Here, the method used to classify the coffee is based on a rather unique parameter: the altitude at which it grows. Indeed, its quality is evaluated based on its height above sea level: generally speaking, the higher the coffee grows the better quality it will be, with absolutely exceptional aromatic notes and taste.
And so it’s not surprising that the coffee judged best in the world in 2017 comes from Honduras. This is thanks to the country’s long tradition of growing this fantastic ingredient, as can be seen by the trades practised by its population: in fact almost a third of them work in the coffee industry!
But what are the characteristics of the coffee from Honduras?
Obviously we cannot describe all the characteristics of every type of coffee from the country, but only provide a few useful general indications.
The beans from Honduras are renowned for their high quality: the coffee they make is full-bodied, has an interesting aromatic acidity with notes of dried fruit, chocolate and caramel, and a slightly sweet, pleasant, delicate taste.
And so obviously, in addition to being perfect when prepared on its own, coffee from Honduras is also ideal when used to complement other blends, adding roundness and aroma.
