Action, it’s coffee time! The real Italian espresso in Berlin
A Berlinale 2020 with more strong emotions and compelling stories than ever before, concluded with the Golden Bear awarded to the moving film “There is no evil” by Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, unfortunately not present at the award ceremony due to the restrictions imposed by the regime.
The 70th edition of the Berlin Film Festival was the first to be directed by Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, after almost twenty years with Dieter Kosslick at the helm. This year the judging panel was chaired by Jeremy Irons, and included Bérénice Bejo, Kenneth Lonergan and our very own Luca Marinelli.
The German festival rewarded the Italian film industry with a number of important awards, confirming the same national prestige that Caffè Aiello sustains and supports not only in Berlin, but also in the other main international events, such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival.

The real Italian espresso by Caffè Aiello tantalised the taste buds of film buffs and industry professionals during the many coffee breaks in the Italian Pavilion, the space set out inside the Gropius Bau, chosen as the headquarters of the European Film Market during the event.
The concept of the Italian Pavilion in Berlinale 2020 is freely inspired by Federico Fellini, as demonstrated by the obvious reference to its dreamlike vibe: a hand-painted brushstroke in the sky, surrounded by ethereal clouds.
Berlinale 2020: Italian cinema triumphs
The 70th Berlin Film Festival marked a grand triumph for the Italian film industry, as some of our national treasures once again won the favour of the judging panel.
The Silver Bear for best actor was awarded to Elio Germano for his excellent interpretation of the painter Antonio Ligabue in the film “Volevo nascondermi” by Giorgio Diritti. The Roman actor dedicated his victory to “all the freaks, oddballs, misfits, outsiders.”
But this was not the only success for Italian films. Brothers Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo won the Silver Bear for best screenplay for the film “Favolacce”, a repeat of the victory achieved in the same category in Berlinale 2019 by Claudio Giovannesi, with “La paranza dei bambini”.
